Jefferson County Jail Overview

The official facility is the Jefferson County Jail / Jefferson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Detention Center. It is operated by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and functions as the county's jail for booking and incarceration. The sheriff's jail page states that all arrested persons taken into custody are transported to the jail. It also says the facility aims to house people safely and securely while providing basic needs.

The jail holds pre-trial detainees, post-conviction inmates serving sentences, people awaiting transport to the Kansas Department of Corrections, inmates from surrounding counties, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees when housed locally. The jail is divided into separate housing areas depending on classification. Male and female inmates are housed separately at all times.

Because the jail can hold people for several systems, the facility name alone does not prove the case is a Jefferson County prosecution. A person may be booked after a local arrest, held on another county's case, awaiting KDOC transport, or subject to an immigration hold. The roster profile, jail staff, court clerk, and the right state or federal locator help sort those paths.

Jefferson County Jail Population

Official county sources reviewed for this project did not publish a rated bed capacity, average daily population, construction history, or unit-level bed count. The public current roster showed 11 inmates when inspected on June 13, 2026. A Prison Policy Initiative correctional-population table listed Jefferson Co. Jail with a local facility population of 29 on December 31, 2013. Those figures are useful context, but the roster count is a point-in-time public list.

The sheriff site also gives county context: Jefferson County has more than 18,000 residents and covers 568 square miles. That does not create a jail-capacity figure, but it helps explain why the jail serves as the central detention point for a spread-out northeastern Kansas county. Current custody still has to be checked through the roster or the jail number.

The sample Jefferson County inmate profile captured in the research shows the kind of details a full roster profile can display.

Jefferson County Jail Booking

Booking starts after arrest and transport to the jail. The public booking record can later show a booking number, booking date and time, arresting agency, charge text, bond amount, age, gender, race, and booking photo. The official sources do not publish a minute-by-minute booking workflow or booking duration, so those details should be confirmed with jail staff when timing matters.

Classification follows intake. The jail page says housing is assigned based on classification and that male and female inmates are housed separately. Classification is the jail's security and placement process. It is different from a court case status and should not be read as a sentence, conviction, or release date.

Remand
A court order keeping a person in custody.
Detainer
A hold request from another agency before release.
PR bond
Release on written promise and conditions rather than full cash payment.

Jefferson County Jail Bond Records

Roster profiles may show a bond field, but the full profile warns that charges and bail amounts may change after court appearances. Bond companies and people wishing to post bail are told to contact detention staff for the correct bail amount, charges, and case numbers. The sheriff's 2026 scam alert adds a local rule: legitimate bond requires physically coming to the Sheriff's Office, filling out paperwork, and paying there.

For copies of sheriff reports, the FAQ says reports can be picked up at the Sheriff's Office, requested by mail, or requested by email at records@jfsoks.org. Reports are not faxed. Offense reports are $3.00 up to 10 pages plus $0.25 for each added page, accident reports are $3.00, and staff time may be charged at $20.00 per hour with a one-hour minimum for reasonable time spent completing a request.

District court records are not handled through the county open-records process. The Jefferson County District Court is at 300 Jefferson St. in Oskaloosa, and Kansas Case Search is the online portal for district court case information. A jail booking charge may differ from the charge filed by the County Attorney, so bond and court-status questions often require both jail and court checks.

About Jefferson County Jail

The jail division is led by Captain George Welch according to the sheriff's jail page captured in the research. The same page focuses on classification, video visits, mail, inmate money, and tablet accounts rather than publishing programming details. No official GED, work-release, substance-abuse treatment, accreditation, or medical-request procedure was located in the reviewed sources.

Local custody can connect to other systems. A person awaiting KDOC transport should be searched in KASPER after transfer. A federal inmate should be searched in BOP. An immigration detainee should be searched in ICE ODLS, and the local jail should be called if Jefferson County custody is also possible.

Note: Confirm custody, visit approval, and bond details with Jefferson County Jail before traveling or sending money.
